My First Year in Deutschland

Today, a year ago, I arrived in Hamburg with a suitcase, a backpack and a job offer, not knowing a single soul, barely a word of German and being an emotional wreck from the sudden ending of a 10 year relationship. It is amazing the difference a year makes. Today I still have the same suitcase, backpack and job but am settled in a gorgeous apartment, have many friends whose company I treasure and my head is in a really good head space. My German still needs much improvement but I can get around and ask for things I want. I have come to love Hamburg and life here. I still have so many things to do and places to explore, but I feel at home here. Moving here is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

It is interesting to look back and remember how I saw life here a year ago and be surprised that I have only been here a year. It feels longer, not because I’ve found things extremely challenging here but because I feel just so settled and at home.

Onwards into year two and I hope it is as much as a blast as my first year here was.
