From Tuning Out To Tuning In

When I first arrived in Germany almost a year ago (has it really been that long?), I couldn’t understand a word of German, therefore when people spoke German around me I just tuned out.  I couldn’t understand it no matter how much I paid attention, so I just didn’t.

Fast forward 11 months and I still tune out even though my level of German has improved. It has become almost automatic.  Hear German being spoken around me, tune out.  I just assume that I won’t be able to understand what is being said. However, this morning, we had company meeting entirely in German which of course I paid attention to.  The thing is, when I paid attention, I actually did understand what was being said.  Of course not everything and there were parts where I got hopelessly lost, but I understood the important bits and was also really thankful that IT uses many English terms to help bring me back on track.

Important lesson learnt: Pay Attention! It’s time to tune back in and start actively listening to what is being spoken around me.

    • If I had put more work into my German, I would be much further advanced than I am now. I’ve been really slack. Time to change that.

  1. Don’t worry yourself German is a difficult language and there are many native Germans out there, who are not able to speak their mother tongue correctly.
